Graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (studying with Dina Grossberger) in 2012, Reinoud Van Mechelen received the prestigious Caecilia Prize for Young Musician of the Year in 2017 by the Belgian Music Press Union, a national accolade for an artist who has since become a prominent figure on the international stage.

He first attracted attention in 2007, at the age of just 20, through the European Baroque Academy of Ambronay under the artistic direction of Hervé Niquet. In 2011, he joined William Christie and Paul Agnew's Jardin des Voix and became a regular soloist with Les Arts Florissants, an ensemble with which he tours the major international stages.

Invitations from major baroque ensembles have poured in, including Collegium Vocale, Le Concert Spirituel, Le Concert d’Astrée, Les Talens Lyriques, Pygmalion, Le Poème Harmonique, B’Rock, Ricercar Consort, Scherzi Musicali, Hespèrion XXI, Utopia to name but a few.

In 2014, he sang the role of the Evangelist in J.S. Bach’s St-John Passion for the first time with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. He later reprised the role for a tour under the baton of William Christie with Les Arts Florissants, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and under the baton of Philippe Herreweghe with Collegium Vocale Gent.

Among the operatic parts he has performed, let us mention among the numerous works by Rameau the title parts in Dardanus, Zoroastre and Pygmalion as well as Hippolyte (Hippolyte et Aricie), Castor (Castor et Pollux), Abaris (Les Boréades). He has also sung Jason (Médée by Charpentier), Orphée (Orphée et Eurydice), Pylade (Iphigénie en Tauride), Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Ferrando (Così fan tutte), Gérald (Lakmé), Nadir (Les Pêcheurs de perles) on stages such as the Opéra de Paris, Opéra Comique, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Philharmonie de Paris, Opéra de Bordeaux, Opéra de Dijon, Opéra de Lille, Opéra de Toulon, Opéra royal de Versailles, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Festival de Beaune, La Monnaie / De Munt and Bozar in Bruxelles, Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, Théâtre de Luxembourg, Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, Opernhaus Zürich, Theater an der Wien, Teatro Real in Madrid, Salzburger Festspiele, Grand-Théâtre de Genève.

Reinoud Van Mechelen has sung under the baton of William Christie, Emmanuelle Haïm, Philippe Herreweghe, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, Hervé Niquet, Raphaël Pichon, Sir Simon Rattle...

His discography also includes Les Fêtes d’Hébé with the Orfeo Orchestra and the  Purcell Choir (Glossa, 2022), Zoroastre with Les Ambassadeurs/La Grande Écurie (Alpha Classics, 2022). Two DVDs are also available : Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie and Mondonville’s Titon et l’Aurore, two productions at the Opéra Comique (2021, Naxos).

Among his upcoming projects: the title part in Tarare by Salieri at the Opéra royal de Versailles, the title part in Idomeneo at the Staatsoper Berlin, Das Weihnachtoratorium with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Matthaüs-Passion with the Freiburger Barockorchester conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Hippolyte et Aricie (Hippolyte) with Les Talens Lyriques as well as numerous concerts with his ensemble a nocte temporis.

Reinoud Van Mechelen also directs the ensemble a nocte temporis, which he founded in 2016.
