Armide was the last lyric tragedy by Lully and Quinault: without doubt Quinault’s most eloquent dramatic achievement, and the culmination of the project for a tragedy in music carried forward by Lully, who died the year after its creation. Never has the language of Lully’s music sounded so beautiful and tragic, and the drama of the Christian knight who falls in love with the sorceress who refuses to kill him was so strongly felt that it held the stage for a century! Vincent Dumestre, at the helm of the Poème Harmonique and the Dijon Opera Chorus, passionately conducts Lully’s latest masterpiece, which, thanks to its eponymous character played by Stéphanie d’Oustrac, never ceases to bewitch us.
